I was in contact with Classroom Friendly Supplies about this pencil sharpener. When I taught in the states I had a parent generously purchase a heavy duty pencil sharpener for my class. That same sharpener is nearly $300 in Australia! A bit too pricey for me to purchase, so I sought after alternatives. I had a similar manual pencil sharpener from a major company, but it was made out of plastic and kept falling apart. Not built for the classroom. So it was time to give this sharpener a shot!
The Quietest Pencil Sharpener
You may have seen other teacher bloggers out there posting about this product. A classroom teacher started selling these to teachers and they seem to be a hit with teachers. It’s more durable than the plastic option I had and holds up pretty well. The pencils are super sharpened and they don’t break when you “over sharpen” them. (Thank goodness because my students are having stubby pencils and we’ve only had 3 weeks of school!)
It’s mainly made from metal so it is more durable. However, there is a plastic piece connecting the turning handle to the body of the product. That part had popped out a few times when trying it out. I think this was more about how I was turning it because once I got the hang of it it hasn’t popped out. The metal piece in the plastic bag is to hold the sharpener down to a table or bookshelf ledge. It’s helpful, but I find it easier to use by keeping my free hand on top of the body while sharpening.
Is it kid friendly?
I would say YES entirely, but I make sure to appoint a responsible student. I have had a few try to go a bit crazy and the handle popped off while using it. I can easily pop it back into place, but I don’t want it to get ruined with those who handle it pretty roughly. I have a select few who can use it properly and find it easy to use. The part my students love is how SHARP it is!
Would I recommend this product?
Apart from the plastic case of the handle popping out when using the sharpener roughly, I still would recommend it to teachers. I can still pop it back in with no problems or damage done to the product. The precision of how sharp and strong the pencils are is the best part. I’ve had crappy pencils constantly break while sharpening with handheld sharpeners so much that I just tell the students to throw the pencil in the bin. Crappy pencils work with this sharpener! WIN!
Plus, it’s only $24.99 USD ($34.95 AUD). I find that pretty affordable, even after the exchange rate. If your school wishes to purchase a bundle, you can save! There replacement pieces, permanent mounting and more on their product page.
